The Big Brother 27 theme (Hotel Mystère) didn’t land with many fans. Now, host Julie Chen Moonves has gotten honest about it as well.

It was supposed to be “a summer of mystery” for Big Brother fans. Instead, the theme seemed to get set aside for most of the summer.

Some fans were surprised by the involvement of BB13 winner Rachel Reilly. But the spoiler hit social media before the season even began.

Additionally, the Mastermind was introduced. He (we later found out it was several people) injected intrigue into the season, but it seemed to have very little impact.

Julie Chen Moonves gets honest about the Big Brother 27 theme

“I did feel slightly disappointed last season with Hotel Mystère,” Julie told Mike Bloom.

“There was this clock on the wall; maybe Rachel Reilly popped out of it. I thought there was going to be more of the evil Mastermind. I would bring that back if the Mastermind [were] a bigger presence. It was a little disappointing that he wasn’t in it enough. Like, where is he?! Where’s his lair? Get him out! Is he practicing to be Zingbot? That was a little disappointing to me. I wanted more of that. So, actually, I would bring that back to do more of it,” she elaborated.

Though Rachel has many fans, others were frustrated that a former houseguest was on the BB27 cast. Some people felt she had an unfair advantage. Advantage or not, Rachel went through a cruel twist. As you may recall, Rachel was eliminated during a Hamster Wheel Maze, and not due to a vote. That didn’t sit well with viewers.

Julie also shared her thoughts on the White Locust twist. That’s when everyone was forced into the backyard and Tyler Crispen hosted the Hamster Wheel of Death Challenge.

“I loved White Locust!” Julie stated. “It wasn’t fair. Neither is life.”

“I mean, it had to show her fans she’s human,” she continues. “She was untouchable, and it showed you it’s a different game. She was the queen when she won. No one can take that away from her. But she didn’t know how to do that one competition. I mean, I get it. She’s a wife, she’s a mom. Our brains are wired a little bit differently. We’re also older. It’s a different game. It gets harder every year,” Julie added.
